Field hockey Tigers fall in opening round
Fourteen girls won’t ever play field hockey again for Ipswich High School.
That is well more than half the team and a lot of girls that Diane Mayo will have to replace off this year’s tournament team from Ipswich.
The girls played their final game on Oct. 29, falling by a score of 3-0 to Lynnfield in the opening game of the Division 2 North state tournament.
“It was quite a crew, all with their own unique style,” said Mayo, of the 14 Class of 2009’ers. “I will miss them, but I will remember the crazy things they did, the sleepless nights wondering what we would do next, and I will laugh out loud over their never-say-never attitude.
“They never ceased to amaze me right down to the last minute of the game,” she added.
Roll call of the 2008 seniors: Ali Howe, Lauren Cox, Kasey Leahy, Hannah Woolfolk, Ali Hamlin, Kelly Gallanar, Kristen Nich, Amanda Marshall, Kelly Skelton, Jillian Wudarczyk, Maggie Berkman, Stephanie Berkman, Jess Mayo and Emily Bouvier. Bouvier, Mayo, Hamlin and Leahy all leave as captains.
Mayo said there were two goals called back that would have been Tigers goals in the tournament game.
However, the team’s sole goal was to make the state tournament. They did that, qualifying in their final game with a 6-6-7 record, returning to the states for the first time since going three games deep in 2006. Last season, they finished at 4-15 and out of the running.
“Field hockey was the only fall sport to go to the tournament [excluding postseason running by the cross country teams],” said Mayo. “Only five teams from the Cape Ann League even went to the tournament at all, so Ipswich should be proud of the girls’ achievements.”
